This Traineeship has been designed by TTOC Media in conjunction with the IAG to multi-skill new entrants to the Television Industry. In fact, 95% of TTOC Graduates have secured a job.



Entry Requirements

Prior Learning Experience:
Applicants must hold one of the following in a relevant subject area:

1. University degree
2. TAFE Certificate 4, Diploma or Degree
3. RTO Certificate 4, Diploma or Degree
4. A minimum of 2 years experience within the industry

Other conditions of entry:
Once you have submitted your application form and met the above entry requirements we will contact you with an interview time (interviews are preferably in person, however, we can also arrange a phone interview if required).

 

Length of Traineeship

Courses will run from February to November 2012.

 

Training Structure

You will spend 2 days per week in the classroom with our A-grade industry Trainers at either North Sydney TAFE or at a broadcast venue. You will spend an average of 16 hours per week in-field in either an outside broadcast or studio environment.

 

Modules

The Broadcast Traineeship is made up of the following 8 skill modules (click on the module for more information):

 

Trainees will be introduced to the role and function of the facilities provider, the current broadcast industry structure and the acquisition, production and distribution of ‘live’ or 'recorded' broadcast content in Australia. In workshop mode, you will work on inventory management and maintenance of standard definition outside broadcast vans and flyaway kits, as well as the operation and installation of key equipment within a mobile studio outside broadcast van environment.

Once completed you will have acquired working knowledge of:

• Grip truck operation
• Rigging an OB
• Staging for studio
• OB cable and cabling
• OH&S for the OB unit, crew and public
• Basic vision signal flow
• Introduction to power and generation
• Portable Outside Broadcast (POB) equipment installation
• Video Tape Recorder (VTR) operation
• Camera Control Unit (CCU) Introduction

 

This unit specifically addresses audio operation and installation. In lecture mode students will be introduced to audio theory, sound design and signal flow. In workshop mode students will work in teams on audio signal acquisition and production. Infield, students can observe and assist on audio set up and application in multi-camera environments such as sporting and studio broadcasts.

In addition, you will learn broadcast microphone theory, set and practice; introduction to audio signal flow; IFB set and practice; and, broadcast/studio etiquette.

 

Classes will be broken up into small teams to gain proficiency in the installation and operation of commentary systems units.

In workshops students will become familiar with IFB configuration and implementation, communication matrix system management, communication peripheral integration and operation


In workshop mode you will be divided into specific areas: Camera (installation, line up and operation); Lighting; and, Installation and Operation of a video server, where you will learn to identify cameras, camera cables, cable routing, camera checks, standard definition and high definition digital camera chain set-up, camera terminology, shot framing, television terminology, and studio and OB etiquette.

Sony hard and portable camera chains, Canon boxed and ENG lenses, Vinten and Sachtler pan and tilt heads, high definition and portable tripods will all be used in this module.

 

Students will work together in tutorial mode to learn the theory of colourimetry, light characteristics, colour temperature and vision monitoring. In workshop mode students will gain experience in multi camera iris, black level and colour matching as well as basic daily technical line ups and common camera fault diagnostics.

 

Students familiar with basic maintenance, installation and operation of components in studio and field will extend their knowledge in the area of:

- Cable termination and repair
- Multimeters
- Basic soldering
- Signal flow
- Technical diagrams
- Basic equipment installation
- Basic microwave link systems
- Equipment familiarisation with camera, vision, audio, data and power cables
- OB rigging equipment
- Multimeters, soldering irons and ancillary termination tools
- Digital POB
- Analogue and digital microwave link systems

 

Video Tape Recorder (VTR) – You will explore the use of tape devices in both studio and OB environments. Our expert trainers will explain the evolution from tape devices to server-based technology providing reasons why one technology is preferred over the other.

You will learn how to operate EVS technology; EVS is the main server technology used in studio and OB environments today.

 

Lighting Assistants will learn about power, different types of lights, light quality (hard or soft), colour temperature (natural light/artificial light), interview lighting (3 point lighting), outdoor sports lighting and studio lighting. Infield experience will involve working with industry professionals on lighting observation, set and operation associated with studio and OB delivery.
